g101 is a collaborative partnership aimed at exploring our strengths and weaknesses as individuals and finding where experiences intersect manifested through multidisciplinary works including kinetic sculptural installations, portraiture and digitally integrated works.

The residency will allow us to experiment materially with wood, textiles, latex, hair, and mirrored surfaces. We are particularly interested in developing mechanical systems that embody the loop between self-image and perception. This concept will be portrayed through an automaton and a series of paintings. We aim to produce a body of work comprising a kinetic automaton and a series of large-scale paintings. These works will interrogate how celebrity culture and trend cycles distort self-perception, particularly through the lens of body dysmorphia. In addition, the works will explore the instability of the ‘self’ through portraiture and kinetic systems.

Angelica Valentina Castro Suarez

Emerging artist born in Venezuela, practicing on Whadjuk Noongar land. My practice is focused on portraiture, and figurative painting informed by my cultural heritage. Through a portrait I explore personal identities, their manifestation through the environment and the impact the subject inevitably has on the artist. As an emerging artist I am working towards creating a comprehensive catalogue of works to further my practice.

Roshen Charles William Ward

Emerging artist born in Melbourne, practicing on Whadjuk Noongar land. My practice is focused on kinetic systems, processing sketches, and video installations. Through these mediums I explore the ethics of biometric surveillance. My installations question the underlying utilitarian and capitalist ideologies of fitness platforms, that commodify personal bodily improvement for corporate gain.
