This exhibition brings together the work of multidisciplinary artists Lisa Liebetrau and Shannon Lyons, to investigate the institutional histories and spaces at Goolugatup Heathcote, that was once home to the former Point Heathcote Mental Reception Home. Curated by Brent Harrison, this exhibition will explore Heathcote’s progressive approach to the treatment of mental health, the lived experiences of its patients, doctors and nurses, and the transformation of the site into a cultural precinct. As patients’ recoveries at Heathcote were partly facilitated by its tranquil surroundings and the refreshing sea breeze; the gallery also offers a similar experience; a quiet, safe space for contemplation and healing. Through the artists’ responses to the institutional history of the site, the exhibition will explore these similarities between its former and current use.
