Altar'd Lament examines migration, diaspora, culture and history. It is produced by Masonik, a multi-disciplinary art collective, and features live music, video projection, and spoken-word performance alongside an immersive-art installation.
The exhibition centres on the history of rebetiko, a form of Greek popular music that emerged from the 1922 destruction of the city of Smyma. Masonik presents this tradition as simultaneously fragile and resilient, comforting and threatening, and an important cultural refuge for the exiled.
