A Venn diagram is a new solo exhibition by Naarm (Melbourne)-based artist Katie Ryan. The exhibition explores the malleability of information, looking specifically at the aesthetic qualities and strategic uses of diagrams, graphs and charts.
These investigations will be realised as multi-part ceramic sculptures embellished with graphite text and illustrations and suspended works made using semi-transparent mesh traditionally used for fly screens.
Diagrams present the relationship between a set of ideas as logical, contained and self-evident through ‘empirical’ aesthetics. In this exhibition, the diagram is imbued with absurd and poetic content, calling into question the authority of this mode.
