Cathleen Day creates hand-stitched rope bowls using synthetic rope collected from remote beaches across Australia and repurposed acrylic yarn. Inspired by a hand-stitching technique used for thousands of years by women around the world to create food-carrying vessels, her work transforms marine debris into functional, durable objects. Cathleen’s practice is rooted in a lifelong connection to nature, shaped by her childhood in Dharug Country, NSW, and the Kimberley, WA. Her long-distance hikes and beach combing journeys reflect a deep environmental awareness and commitment to preserving Australia’s coastlines for future generations.
